Maine Voices Live: Tim Cotton

Talks/Lectures, Social Media
After a dozen years working violent crimes as a detective, Det. Lt. Tim Cotton took on a new role at the Bangor Police Department that allowed him to pull from his other life experiences as a broadcaster and storyteller. One of his responsibilities is running the department’s Facebook page and in the span of three years, with a little help from the Duck of Justice, Cotton has grown the department’s following from 10,000 to (almost) 275,000—more than eight times the population of Bangor. He's now the Criminal Investigations Commander within the department, but he still makes plenty of time for social media. Tim Cotton will be interviewed by Jim Patrick, a Portland Press Herald reporter and its social media editor.

James Montgomery

Blues
When blues legend James Montgomery plays the harmonica, he "brings it on home." Whether recording with Kid Rock, sitting in with Gregg Allman or fronting his hot band of over 30 years, Montgomery plays with authority. While growing up in Detroit he learned first-hand from the masters (James Cotton, John Lee Hooker and Jr. Wells) at the legendary "Chessmate." Over the years, he's carried on in the tradition and continues to be a vital presence in blues as one of the most dynamic performers on the scene.

George Winston

Jazz, Folk, Pop, Classical
George Winston is known for interpreting pieces on solo piano by his most beloved composers. The inspiration for this happened in 1965 when, at 16, he saw "A Charlie Brown Christmas," featuring Vince Guaraldi's timeless soundtrack. In addition to Guaraldi, other influences on Winston include Professor Longhair, The Doors, Frank Zappa, Randy Newman and Sam Cooke. Outside of his piano compositions and performances, he is also an accomplished blues harmonica and slack-key guitar player. In concert, he'll play selections from his seasonal favorites performed in his melodic folk style, as well as some New Orleans R&B, stride piano, and more.

Robyn Hitchcock

Folk, Pop, Punk, Rock
Over the past three decades, Robyn Hitchcock has built a large and distinctive body of work that's established him as one of rock's most respected and beloved iconoclasts. The prolific English singer/songwriter/guitarist's vivid surrealist songcraft has won him an uncommonly devoted international fan base, and created an ongoing demand for rare and unreleased Hitchcock material. He has 21 studio albums (including his self-titled 2017 effort) and nine live albums to his name, and was the subject of a Jonthan Demme-directed concert film, "Storefront Hitchcock."

Mary Gauthier

Country, Folk
Alt-country singer/songwriter Mary Gauthier exploded onto the scene in 1999 following her self-released sophomore effort, "Drag Queens in Limousines." The album, which garnered her a Crossroads Silver Star and a four-star rating in Rolling Stone, had critics comparing her self-described "country noir" to the likes of Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, John Prine, and, not surprisingly, Lucinda Williams. Gauthier's warmly candid treatment of her fringe-dwelling subjects rings true and never verges on sentimental.
