Silent Movie Series: Buster Keaton in Steamboat Bill Jr.

Our annual Silent Movie Series is curated by our own house organist Dennis James. Each movie event is presented with live musical accompaniment on our historic Mighty Andy Crow Wurlitzer Organ—a treasure restored from 1924. Featuring some of Keaton’s most famous sight gags, this 1928 comedy is part prodigal son, part Romeo and Juliet, and all laughs. Keaton shines while performing his own stunts, including a legendary scene with a falling house.

International Guitar Night

World
Beginning in a converted laundromat in the Bay Area in 1995, International Guitar Night has grown to feature the best performing guitar composers from around the world. Audiences cherish the friendly, informal ambiance and unique brand of “guitar positivity” that has made it the most successful guitar showcase of its kind. For IGN’s 2018 tour, Germany’s Gypsy Jazz legend Lulo Reinhardt will return as the show’s host and will be joined by Calum Graham, the young Canadian contemporary sensation; Marek Pasieczny, Poland’s innovative classical composer/ performer, and award-winning American guitarist Michael Chapdelaine. Lulo has built on grand-uncle Django Reinhardt’s repertoire by introducing Latin rhythms. Calum has a two-handed style that has attracted millions of YouTube viewers. Marek has performed and written for a variety of orchestras around the world, and Michael has won both the Guitar Foundation of America Classical Guitar Competition and the National Fingerstyle Championship for steel string guitar.

Las Cafeteras create a vibrant musical fusion with a unique East LA sound and a community-focused political message. Their Afro-Mexican rhythms, zapateado, and inspiring lyrics tell stories of a community who is looking for love and fighting for justice in the concrete jungle. A remix of traditional Son Jarocho sounds, the band adds Afro-Caribbean marimbol and cajón, poetry in English and Spanglish, and instruments like jarana, requinto, a donkey jawbone, and a wooden platform called the Tarima.
