Emily Wood: Sky, Field, and Shore

Emily Wood: Sky, Field, and Shore

Gallery, Painting
Harris Harvey Gallery presents Sky, Field, and Shore throughout the month of November, an exhibition featuring Tacoma artist Emily Wood’s newest vibrant “colorist” landscape paintings of Eastern and Western Washington as well as Montana’s vast terrain. Strikingly rendered in oil, these recent paintings highlight the diverse topography of the West and the scenic variation within the region. The artist will be present for the opening reception First Thursday, November 1 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Over two decades, Emily Wood has reinvented Western vistas by presenting the natural landscape in vivid hues with a painterly approach. From the thick forest groves of the Pacific Northwest and the sun-bleached hills of the Palouse, to the expansive skies of Idaho and Montana, Wood distinctly captures nature through a transformative compositional approach. While the geography is familiar to the artist, she remains captivated by the ever-changing effects of light and season. Wood offers a personal perspective of these spaces through the use of simplified forms, amplified color, and a powerful presence of light. Wood, a University of Washington B.A. graduate, has been exhibiting regularly in the Seattle area since the 1990s. Her work has been featured in galleries in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and throughout Washington state, including a solo exhibition at The Clymer Museum in Ellensburg, Washington (2012). Her work can be found in the collections of Seattle University’s Sullivan Law Center, Merrill Lynch, Seattle Cancer Alliance, UW Medical Center, and Tacoma Art Museum as well as in private collections on the East and West Coasts. The artist has been included in important regional survey shows at The Tacoma Art Museum (1995) and the Whatcom Museum of History and Art (1999).
