Anna Ziegler’s Photograph 51 is about British biophysicist and crystallographer Rosalind Franklin, whose X-ray diffraction images of DNA proved critical to the discovery of the double helix structure in 1953. Without her knowledge, these images were shown to scientists James Watson and Francis Crick, who went on to publish their hypothesis and receive credit for the discovery (including a Nobel Prize in 1962).
