Genre: Nouveau Flamenco Related Artist: Gypsy Kings It's no wonder that guitarist Ottmar Liebert's music reflects so many of the world's cultures. Born in Cologne, Germany to a German-Chinese father and Hungarian mother, he journeyed through Asia in his late teens, paid his dues in jazz/funk bands on the USA's east coast and settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico in the 80's. The Spanish influence in Santa Fe provided the catalytic element that defined his musical identity: flamenco. Liebert says: "What I do is a fusion of elements that tap outside the traditions, taking from flamenco what I enjoy and mixing it up in a way that makes sense to me." It's a tribute to Liebert that he could forge his seemingly organic style out of such disparate ingredients: "In A Silent Way"-era Miles Davis and Carlos Santana (his earliest inspirations), jazz/funk and flamenco. The secret would seem to be that his sources are all about "feel", that hard to define quality that works on the senses before the intellect.
