(Virtual) Grit City Think & Drink - From Black Lives Matter to Black Wives Matter: Exploring How Pornography Has Sexualized Social Justice Movements

Talks/Lectures
FROM BLACK LIVES MATTER TO BLACK WIVES MATTER: EXPLORING HOW PORNOGRAPHY HAS SEXUALIZED SOCIAL JUSTICE MOVEMENTS with Dr. Carolyn West, UW Tacoma.
In the summer of 2013, after George Zimmerman's acquittal for the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, the movement began with the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter (BLM). Porno producers quickly created the video “Black Wives Matter” and declared that “Civil rights have never been this dirty.” In solidarity with the BLM movement, pornography companies called for “an end to racist marketing practices and films that rely on stereotypes and ignorance.” Using a content analysis of more than 6,000 front and back covers of adult DVDs featuring Black performers, in this Think&Drink Dr. West will explore the racist tropes that have been depicted in pornography during the past 20 years. Grab your favorite beverage while we have a PG-13 rated discussion of the implications of turning contemporary social justice movements into X-rated material.
Dr. Carolyn West is Professor of Clinical Psychology at UWT where she teaches courses on the Psychology of Black Women and Sex Crimes and Sexual Violence. Dr. West also has written extensively on racism in sexualized media. In 2018 she produced the documentary “Let Me Tell Ya’ll ‘Bout Black Chicks: Images of Black Women in Pornography,” which has been screened at international conferences. She also has worked as an expert witness in domestic violence/sexual assault cases, delivered keynote addresses, conducted workshops, and created innovative training materials to educate and equip professionals with the skills to provide culturally sensitive services to domestic violence and sexual assault survivors of color. She can be reached at www.DrCarolynWest.com.
